Birgit Wick is an award-winning designer and painter who lives and works in Sausalito, California. She studied Graphic Design in Germany, and Expressive Arts in Switzerland and San Francisco. A successful recipient of artist residencies in Hawai’i and New Mexico, and artist grants in the Bay Area, she has exhibited in Hawai’i and on the West Coast. Her work is in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
Birgit’s passion is brush and ink, blending eastern and western aesthetics. Engaging in a contemplative and intuitive process of painting, free of literal representation, she mostly creates abstract compositions with richly layered textures, organic shapes and dynamic lines with swift, expressive brush strokes. The brush acts as a direct extension of an inner landscape of passing phenomena, such as thoughts and emotions.
“I am fearless when it comes to brush and ink. You can’t hesitate when you work on large paper.”
The foundation for her work is threefold: In her many years as a graphic designer she has refined her skills in composition, aesthetics and color; her ongoing study of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) with Berkeley artist Kaz Tanahashi has taught her how to follow the brush; and her meditation practice allows for attuned listening and presence in the artistic process.
